The Pop Smoke project

In 2021 we were tasked with the almost impossible: to come up with a way of recreating someone's hologram who has already passed away. This is how we got involved in a music video of Pop Smoke and Dua Lipa.

Back in 2020, the death of Pop Smoke shook the music world. The young artist was the victim of a home invasion. Back then it was not clear what's going to happen to all his pre-recorded and already written songs. After a while his management and the studio decided to release the songs in a posthumous album and to even create music videos. In the video for the song Demeanor, which is set in a lavish banquet/party in a castle on a hilltop, we can see Pop Smoke portrayed both as the subject of a divine portrait on the wall — mimicking The Last Supper — and as a ghostly cloud seated at the head of the table. To create this ghostly cloud, his management wanted to have the most accurate results; this is where RISIGNSTAR came into play. We recorded an actor in our studio, whose hair and clothes were made identical to Pop Smoke. Later in the process, his hologram was used to create the ghost in the music video.

This is just one example of the possibilities we have with volumetric capture. Imagine having every artist scanned in the metaverse, we could preserve memories for future generations in a way that's never been done before.
